The conference was a networking opportunity for individuals and organisations involved in interfaith action and dialogue, community service and engagement across the South East England to explore how the changing public service reform agenda affects individuals, communities and organisations in the South East England and discuss the role of faith communities have to play in the Big Society agenda.

The day included keynote addresses from Baroness Verma – the Spokesperson for the Cabinet Office on International Development and Equalities and Women’s Issues who commended SEEFF on their efforts to bring together faiths around the South East. Malcolm Brown compelling speech was very well received by the participants who admired his on the pulse reflections on the Big Society. David Rayner also brought unique insights into government policies and civic processes from his experience of working at the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG).

The conference also provided participants with an opportunity to participate in workshops that aimed to address the various dimensions of the Big Society agenda such as giving communities more power, encouraging active role in the community, supporting co-ops, charities and social enterprises. The workshops illustrated how faiths can come together in joint initiatives to motivate others to understand the needs in the community. Sussex Pathways led an interactive workshop participants explored how to run social mentoring scheme in order to train and support volunteers to empower offenders to make positive life choices, by supporting their resettlement in the community. The second workshop led by Faiths Act showcased practical examples from around the world and opportunities where faith communities working together have been a force for good. VIP Minds workshop explored new innovative and inspirational teaching, coaching and mentoring programmes while Community Saving and Loans LTD helped participants develop strategies and ideas for projects that allow faith communities to engage with the Big Society by sharing good practices.

Overall, participants found the conference was a good opportunity to reflect on what role do faith communities have to play in the Big Society, understand how projects can demonstrate the value of faith community and existing service led interfaith projects and identify specific areas in which faith communities play an important role in the Big Society.
