July 2008

The national launch of the Government’s Inter-Faith Strategy was held on 21 July at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. Some SEEFF members arranged for a display relating to Inter-Faith work in localities across the Region and a SEEFF banner setting out what SEEFF is about. This national launch was limited to just 15 invitations to each region. So, we have begun thinking about arranging a separate SE Regional launch where we could also feed back to SEEFF members on what developments have happened since the 7 April SEEFF Conference. We considered two venue options but decided the University of Surrey Business School, Guildford was the most practical option. It is intended that this will be an early evening event between 6.00 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. with refreshments. For more information click here

The next meeting of our SEEFF interim steering group is on 15 September at Guildford. We have now heard that RAISE have been unsuccessful in their bid for a three year inter-faith post through Capacity Builders. In conversations with Anna Cummins (Department for Communities and Local Government, Cohesion and Faiths) we have continued to press for resources for SEEFF to take forward its development following the Conference. We spoke at the Conference about a ‘scoping exercise’ that would also address issues about ongoing governance. We continue to press for this and we are hopeful of a positive response after the launch of the Government’s Inter-Faith Strategy.

Part of the budget put together for the 7 April SEEFF Conference was for ‘bridging work’ to link with the RAISE post and the scoping work. Following conversations with Anna Cummins and her team this work is going ahead in anticipation of resources we hope will follow for the scoping work despite the RAISE bid being unsuccessful. This interim work over the next couple of months is in four parts:
  1. Information about the faith links, representation, status and support needs within local strategic partnerships and the voluntary, community and faith sectors across the South East Region.

  2. Information about the Inter-Faith Networks across the South East Region and their experience of and potential for public service delivery.

  3. Information about resources, experience, best practice models of work used and known about by bodies already involved in Inter-Faith relations.

  4. Guidance and information about the structure, organisation and ways of faith bodies in the South East Region in order to facilitate clearer understanding and communication with and between them.

Consultation

It is very likely that much of the above information already exists but in order for SEEFF to move forward this needs bringing together. Any information, suggestions and feedback that you have in relation to this work will be most welcome. David Tonkinson from the Department for Social Responsibility (DSR), Diocese of Guildford is to co-ordinate this task with the assistance of Elizabeth Clark and Richard Hay. Please communicate directly with Canon David Tonkinson (Partnership Development Officer, DSR) at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  in relation to this.

We will put this information on the SEEFF website and circulate the SEEFF membership in order that this consultation, albeit over a very limited period, can be as full as possible. Once the information has been brought together it will be put on the SEEFF website.

Yours, Chris.
